Sketching

As I am sure that you are aware, design is a process. Rarely will you be able to come up with the best, and most appropriate, solution in the first try. Typically there is communication between client and designer to reach a solution.

As I am also sure that you are aware, the computer is just a tool. It is a tool that needs software, and more importantly–electricity to run properly. So what do you do if you do not have access to a computer? Use a pencil and a piece of paper! Read this article to learn more about sketching–also take note of some of the comments at the bottom of the article. Don't forget to respond and comment here.

I personally love sketching anyway, in fact, my drawing classes are what eventually brought me to Graphic Design in the first place. I also had it beaten into my head that the best designs come from liberal planning and the most creative solutions come when outside of the computer lab. Neither of which is possible without a little sketching before you start to work. I tend to use the computer to channel my work, rather than to create it. After all, a computer is just a dumb tool, and if you haven't prepared something good to go in, nothing good will come out.

I think sketching the worst possible ideas is an awesome idea. It lets you be weird and silly, and helps you narrow down what you don't want in the design.

i love to sketch. in fact, my math notes contain more sketches than notes. Thats how it is with most of my classes. I do think that sketching is important when you create a design but i sometimes don't think it is necessary. I usually have a pretty good idea of what i want and i think it is much easier to see what works and what doesn't when i have the exact colors, shapes, and fonts at my fingertips.

I have always enjoyed drawing sketches and coming up with new and creative imaginative ideas. The world seems so large but I believe that art can be a universal language. Can convey moods and feelings across a vast spectrum of people. And drawing these ideas out of an individuals mind and being able to present it to the world is somewhat magical. People can take away from art what they want. Some may see beauty, some may see sadness and some may see turmoil from the exact same drawing. And being able to communicate artistically could change the world.

Sketching was my window into this world of graphic design. This is how I started playing with creative side. I feel that the ability to sketch what's in your head onto a piece of paper is a very important skill to use when you design. This unwinding of ideas onto paper really helps to organize all of your ideas and create new ones. I am all for sketching and I wish we had more drawing classes here at RMU!

I believe that sketching is important because it helps you get more ideas and increase your ability. It's half and half for me because when I sketch it out and planned out I end up changing half of my work. That's what happens of being creative I guess.

I use sketching as an outlet to what I want to create. Its hard for me to jump to a certain idea that interests me, so by sketching I jump from idea to idea and sometimes can even combine images and text. With sketching you never know what you are going to come up with. And usually the ideas that you sketch are far better than the plain thought images in your mind. That is all... Have a great day!

This was a good read for me as I myself have been struggling with sketching. I am trying to come up with various ideas for a project of my own. I think I will start carrying my sketchbook with me more often and see what I come up with.
