Work Environment

It is never too late to think about your future, and where you see yourself working. There are several general types of design environments - freelance, agency/design firm, or in-house. Undoubtedly, some of you see yourselves working solo as a freelancer. All of these types of work environments have their own challenges, and not everyone can work in all of these settings.

Where do you see yourself working the best? Are you the type of person who can take a laptop anywhere and work? Do you think that you would have enough will-power and self-control to work from your home? Are you the type of person who needs socialization and the face-to-face that a studio would provide? Comment on this post with your thoughts.

Take a moment to really think about the type of work environment would best suit your style. Be honest with your post, there is no right or wrong here.

Personally I couldn't work at home for my full time job. There would be way to many distractions involved. Self motivation has always been a problem for me. So the structure of a formal work environment is helpful for me. While I am going into graphic design it is most likely that I will bring home with me. Which is not a problem, it can be done. But for the majority of my work time I need the feel/atmosphere/structure of your typical office/workspace.
When it comes to personal interaction I tend to be quite and keep to myself, but I enjoy the fact of having co-workers nearby incase I need their opinion or just their company.
So when it comes time to find a job I would prefer one in which there is at least a small office space, one that is open concept, yet gives each their own privacy.

I think That as a designer I could work in any environment. I like to work on my own so if something goes wrong I can only blame myself. But I like to work w/ others in agroup settings to get others input and ideas. Brainstorming is easier w/ more minds working as one. But I feel I could do in house work and free-lance work on my own. Just have to be driven to succeed.

I Ideally would like to work for a design firm, rather than independently or in-house for a larger company. I like working with people, and need the structure being in an office rather than at home, but tend to dislike rigid office structure (such as working in house for CAT). I feel like the ability to bounce ideas off of other creatives, and being in an environment where creativity is the main goal would allow me to produce my best work the most efficiently. I have also found that when I work form home doing freelance, I tend to not be able to put the work down, and leaving my work at the office is part of living well for me.

I beleive I can work in any type of environment when it comes to designing. If I had my choice i wouldn't mind working at home some days and maybe some days i go into a studio or wherever. I feel like if your going to be a successful designer you should be able to work in any situation, there's inspiration in all places. Working in an office has its good and bad. I like the fact that you can work with other minds and get input from everyone on your work. When it comes to working at home though you are able to unwind and listen to good music loud....thats my dream job.

I could work at home and I would enjoy it because I would be able to take breaks when I wanted and might even get inspiration from my surroundings. I would even be able to go to other locations to work if needed because I would not be cramped in an office

Unfortunately I dont think working at home for me would be a good idea. As good as it sounds, I think I would become to relaxed and may tend to slack on the work that needs to be done. The work environment at an office setting would help reinforce my work ethics.

I think i'd really like to work for a company, and also maybe do some freelance work on the side for extra cash. I can definitely go anywhere and work and even trust myself to get work done at home. I can go hang out with friends and do some design work, its nice to have someone to share an opinion nearby. and as for working at home, if i just put on some tunes at a moderate level, or the tv on low i could go to town! unless futurama is on.. then the tv has to be off! i cant resist that show =/ Definitely like to work for a company though, especially one like Rolling Stone Magazine or Blender. Something heavily music based.

I'm the type of person that cannot have commotion or too many distractions without it impacting my work. I have a hard time thinking as well as creating any sort of project when I am surrounded by other people. I am able to complete my work with other people surrounding me, but I take so much longer when I am attempting to do it because I am so easily distracted by things that are going on around me.

Because I want to go into wedding planning/design, I know at some point in my life I want to own my own business. As for going into the field right out of college, I'm still not completely sure what is the best way to go. If I could work along side a planner at their own firm, who has had years of experience, would be amazing and would be a great environment for me to be in. I could also work from home as well if I wish, but I feel that a firm would be more professional.

I can work from home, because there I can exercise, pump up, and talk to myself; that's what helps me brainstorm. Especially if I'm writing a screenplay. I act out the scenarios. I plan on working for design firm. I really want to be an art director especially for ads, but I'm torn between video or print. I'm certain that I don't want to do freelance.
I would love to work with people. I can do group work just fine, but I'm more of a director when it comes to group work, I think. Maybe that's why I'm liking the art director idea.

I don't think it really matters where I work if it is at home or at the office as long as the job is done. Personally I would love to work at home but sometimes I tend to take time doing my work when I should be on top of it. There are some pros and cons about working at home or at the office.

i wouldn't want to work at home. if i have kids when i grow up, then chances are they would be as obnoxious as i am and i wouldn't get a single thing done. i would want to work in an office; you can bounce ideas off of other people, you'll be part of a network, and i watch the office waaay too much, so i've got a wishful thought that my job would be similar to that.

however working at home would be kind of nice because you can have music on, you make your own hours, you wouldn't have to find a babysitter, you wouldn't have to drive to work.

honestly i don't think i'd want to turn my house into my workplace, even if i had my own office in my house. it wouldn't be as fun for me.
